Amy (2015) tells the untold story of the late jazz/blues/soul singer Amy Winehouse through the use of unseen "archival" footage and personal testimonials from the people who knew her best, and Amy herself. Through this documentary, we learn about who Amy was, what inspired her to get into music, and her substance abuse problem, which would eventually cause her death in 2011.

For the past 20 years or so, in my opinion, society has gotten more voyeuristic, and people love to get an inside look into the hidden aspects of people's lives. This documentary plays directly into that affinity for voyeurism, by showing us Amy's struggles with mental health, her troubled relationships, body dysmorphia, substance abuse, and tendency for self-sabotage.

This tragic documentary also shows us how despite the fact that she didn't think of herself as famous, she didn't know who she could trust because of the paparazzi and the media. As she was struggling with all these problems, the media was brutal, trying to capture her struggles and making fun of her. It was quite shocking to see her spiral downward after every negative experience in her life--such as her parents' divorce, the death of her grandmother, and her divorce from Blake--and how she turned to drugs and alcohol to cope. The media knew of her vices, but showed no mercy, and pushed her to the edge.
